Homonormativity
Homonormativity is a word coined by Lisa Duggan in 2003, to describe the assimilationist neoliberal politics practiced by most contemporary “gay rights” organizations. It is the assimilation of heteronormative ideals and constructs into queer culture and individual identity. Homonormativity upholds neoliberalism rather than criticizing monogamy, procreation, and binary gender roles as the heterosexist rules they really are. This practice splits up queer communities into hierarchies of those considered “worthier” than others to receive equality. Those at the bottom of the hierarchy (bisexuals, transfolk, and those who don’t identify with the gender binary) are, essentially, seen as a roadblock to white cisgender homosexuals and ignored in the so-called “struggle for equal rights.”
CHUUUUUUURCH.
